Clonbur and Cong, County Galway

This was our last stop in Ireland.  We picked it because it was away from large towns and would allow us to relax and do some hiking.  The morning we left Dingle for Ballykine House in Clonbur, we looked at the map for driving directions.  Craig, studying our destination, said “Quiet Man Heritage Cottage?”  Imagine our surprise when we realized that Craig’s favorite movie in the world, The Quiet Man, was filmed 3 miles from our lodging!

We didn’t take this picture of Ballykine House; it’s the one from their website.  Cool, huh?

Here’s the view from our window.  Not surprising, that’s a cow pasture in the foreground.  We sure walked through a lot of cow pastures to get places in Ireland!

This is the guest area they have set up, as seen from our window.

A replica of

Sean Thornton’s

White O’Morn cottage

in ‘Innisfree’.  Cong is actually a small town 1 block wide by 2 blocks long.  For the movie, Innisfree was on one half of the rectangle, and Castletown was on the other.

Pat Cohan’s Bar, where Michaeleen’s horse stopped automatically.  By the way, this never was a bar, and so far never has been.  They’ve just always kept the storefront they way it was painted in the movie.

This is the home of Reverend and Mrs. Playfair.  The Cala Lilies are new, though . . .

This is the dying man’s house, currently with red flowers in the windows.  This street is the center one that intersects the town.  The stone wall at the end borders the road you see the entire cast on at the very end of the movie.

One of several locations for what some people call the longest fight scene in the history of movies, between Sean Thornton and Will Danaher.

The tour guide assigned Quiet Man characters to each of our small group.  Here is Sean Thornton (played by Craig) and Mary Kate Danaher (played by Lori)

‘playing patty fingers’ at the church.

Mary Kate is peeking around the corner of the church gate at Sean right after the Patty Fingers episode.

This is the “I’m comin’ for ya, Mary Kate” scene between Sean (Craig) and Mary Kate (Lori) – wait, I don’t remember it quite this way in the movie.  I suspect the tour guide was taking some liberties with the script here . . .

Can you guess this scene location?  If you step through the church gate in the last two pictures and turn left, this is the path Mary Kate pedals her bike down after the church scene.

After the tour, we all came back to White O’Morn and dressed up in our character costumes.

Sean and Mary Kate are being married here . . .

. . . the kiss . . .

. . . and the honeymoon!

Actually, our director/tour guide had us re-take this scene because Craig threw me on the bed too soon the first time.  I don’t think the director actually realized how many ‘full Irish breakfasts’ I’d eaten in the prior two weeks!

Here is ‘Innisfree’ today, looking down the street towards the ‘Castletown’ end of town.
